Writing Situation: In the short story "The Masque of Red Death," Edgar Allen Poe creates an allegory for the human condition, in a style that has become known as Gothic horror. Within this dark tale, a prince abandons his country's people by locking himself in an isolated abbey in order to protect himself and thereby relinquishing the responsibility of leadership.

Directions: Write a well-developed response that identifies one or more individuals that is in a position of leadership and then analyze that person's actions as a leader. The leader may be a political figure (such as the president or governor), a celebrity, the leader of a community group, a coach, a teacher, a parent, the captain of a sports team, or any other person who has the responsibility of leadership.
